Notation
Cube Home
The notation is very simple. There is a lettered name given to each of the six faces of the cube, and if you see that letter it means to turn that face clockwise 90 degrees. If you see that letter with an apostrophe after it, it means to turn that face counter-clockwise 90 degrees. If you see a letter with a 2 after it, that, of course, means to turn that face 180 degrees. Don't you dare ask what direction, or you're not worthy. Just kidding. Either direction is fine for the 180 degree twists.
The name of the front face is, easily enough, F. The right face is R and the left face is L. The back face is B. Getting the hang of this? The bottom face is D for down, and not B because that would coincide with the back face. Thus, for consistency, the top face is U for up, and not T for top. When I say "clockwise", you must pretend you are looking at the face in question, or actually look at it, because if there is a turn of the back face, it would be different if you were looking through the cube than if you turned it around and looked at the back.
Hold your cube with blue on the front, red on the right, yellow on the top, orange on the left, green on the back, and white on the bottom. This is what "U R" would look like:
Now, holding your cube the same way, record every color on every face of the cube onto paper, then do this sequence of moves, and see if everything is exactly the same as when you started. If it's not, try again.
R U F' D' L' F R' D' R D' R' D2 U2 F' U F U2 L U' L' U L' U' L B U2 B' U' B' U' B L U F U' F' U L' U L U2 L' U2 F2 R' F D2 B' L B D2 F L F R F' L'
If it's really annoying you, you don't really have to be able to do this, but if you can do it, then you will make less mistakes when it really counts, like when you're almost done.
